The Exhibition...
100% Design is an annual exhibition of the UK's top designers. I decided to visit the 2003 show in order to look for inspiration in terms of forms, colours, materials and in particular furnishings and lighting.

The first stand to catch my attention was that of Tornado Lighting, a company producing light fittings. The first light I sketched was interesting as it solved the problem of lighting in a different way to the norm. The old fashion street lamp form has been taken, simplified to a modern form and minimized. Two such shapes have then been joined to create a new, exciting device.

This image is of a projector light. If used in a pale room this lamp would cause light to bounce around, giving a soft diffused shade to the room. The stainless steel material makes the light futuristic, and also gives it a clean feel.

This last lamp takes the conventional form of the desktop light, but uses it in a different context to produce a compact light for a small room.

The next stand I was interested in was that of Bisque Radiators. In particular I found their designs for the 'Hot Spring' especially intrigued me, as they are an excellent, compact solution to the problem of heating. The coil is also very aesthetically pleasing and it could in fact form the centre piece of my room. The coiled form of the radiator also maximises surface area, so that a far smaller coil radiator would be required to heat the room than a conventional one.

Next I looked at the stand for Aqua Designs. They design water features and aquariums for offices and hotels. I found the way their designs use the calming qualities of water especially inspiring, as I feel the movement of bubbles and flow of water when lit would be especially therapeutic, and would make the rooms in my project far more comfortable.
