Folding chairs have been available for many years. They come in many shapes and sizes and allow for easy storage. I have looked at varying folding chairs through the ages in an article on designboom.com. In it the author traces back the folding chair to Egyptian times, where it was a status symbol. In fact up until the last couple of centuries convenience was not the purpose of their design. In the last hundred years many patents have been made for folding chair designs, and the chair design has always been the area of furniture design which sees the most innovation and exciting new ideas.
It is likely my final design will include at least one folding part, so I have looked closely at these images of chairs to inspire the hinge parts of my bed. Through the inclusion of a computer I would be able to take the age-old idea of folding furniture into the 21st century.
